AMEX standards are not particularly high for issuing charge cards. Their exposure is relatively low by virtue of the nature of the credit extended (no fixed credit limit, must be paid off every month). Plus the Plat card has a $550 annual fee.
The "exclusivity" of this card is much more perception (and marketing) than reality.
