seems like a case of hindsight...I, like OP, would have gone to hotel in my experience. I've seen flights cancelled after even longer delays. I'd rather relax in my room if I can spare the time the next day. I personally have no care for chilling at the UC (cancelled my membership this year). It isn't as flashy as people think it to be after spending hours and hours there for multiple years...
The desk lady didn't seem helpful and that usually is a sign of a longer delay. With the details I would have made the same choice. The fact that it left 1130 is just pure bad luck - classic united where any choice you make was a bad choice!
Tally up the receipts, and scan/email it to UA and express your dissatisfaction. I usually get 300 ua GC easy as 1k, but I think they are generous based on status.
