I believe I am correct in saying that when an aircraft is not flying for an airline (G.A. or private jet) then ATC uses the aircraft's registration to call it, using the Alpha, Bravo, Charlie nomenclature for the letters in the registration.
So N123AB becomes "November-One-Two-Three-Alpha-Bravo".
