That's how I usually "share" armrests; I'm on the shorter side, so use the back 3-4" of the armrest for my arm, and the front part is available for the other person. He was always reading his large financial newspaper and since it was too big to open it in full, he had it in half which meant he was turning that thing around twice as often, his arm was all over the place and he had no issue bumping into me even as I tried to claim some of that "shared" space he talked about. Again, I wouldn't have approached the FA if I had been able to get SOME space, not even talking about the whole armrest.
