Go to the AAdvantage tab at aa.com and click on "Redeem Miles" or "Use Miles" or something similar to see non-flight redemption options.

It's relatively easy to keep your miles from expiring. Click on the "Earn Miles" section to see the various ways of earning miles without flying.
