When I moved to the US from EU, I thought it was unfair that I had to pay the same as a couple : It's common in Europe: two people use more water, more electricity, more towels, create more wear & tear, more garbage, more dirt... Rates also used to include free breakfast, clearly not in your case.
besides, they charge what they can get - no different than an airline.
