Initial indications seem to suggest it
might work for Avios (or other) redemption bookings. The key is to get your AAdvantage EXP number added to the reservation and then seeing if you can request the upgrade electronically (without human interaction). Success rate will probably be less if you ask at the airport and the agent notices you're on a redemption booking. As always, YMMV. If you don't like the first response, you can try asking nicely again.
