Doubletree Suzhou
Hi all,
To add to the list, I am just finishing up a 4 night award stay (can't use the 5th since I couldn't get an award flight!). I would put this mid-range of the various Hilton properties that I've stayed in mainland China (incl. Conrad Beijing, Hilton Jing'an, Chongqing, Chengdu, Hefei...).
The location is quite good being in a quiet area, but right on the subway line. As a Diamond, I got an upgrade to an Exec floor - but no suite. Breakfast is included in the lounge, but an extra RMB60 in the main restaurant.
I had the lounge breakfast for a couple of days which includes a selection of Chinese and Western options, sushi/sashimi, juices, fruits, pastries and an omelette station. The main restaurant has essentially the same things - just a bit more choice. I tried it this morning (and ate way too much), but it's nothing to write home about. There are also a couple of noodle bowl stations (always my 1st choice) and some more dim sum options and steamed root veg. I'd pick the lounge next time.
The lounge also offers a 'tea time' from 2-4 with some cakes and 'cocktail hour' from 5.30-8pm with an assortment of OK snacks and bottom shelf self-pour alcohol (the drinks last until 9pm lounge closes at 11pm).
The gym is fairly good with lots of space and light and a variety of machines and dumbbells, but no other free weights and has been mostly empty. There's also a 20m pool which is unfortunately crazy busy this week (first week of summer holidays) and a cool looking kids play area with its own ball park!
I've only stayed at the 4 Points here in town before. This one is in a similar class, I'd say, though that has a better location (especially with the new subway line just opened nearby), but this has an exec lounge. Not the best Hilton in China, but better than almost any I've stayed at in NA!
I was going to say that the level of English of the lounge staff wasn't great, but as I keep reminding my wife, that's just not correct. What I mean to say is that my level of Chinese is not good enough to talk with them as well as I should. (That's my biggest regret after 3 years traveling here!).
Heading home to Canada (via PVG-ICN-LAX-YVR) tomorrow and sad for the last foreseeable visit to China.
