You can use someone else's account to upgrade your flights. Log into your Dad's account (or ask him to do it) and then go to Manage my booking using the booking reference and proceed to upgrade with miles and it will use his miles.

Otherwise best deal is to purchase Starpoints, I think that's cheaper than buying Skywards miles direct.
