I was helping a dual national with their UK passport application the other day and was asked to enclose any uncancelled non UK passports with the application. That's a bit of a bind as he was planning to travel on the other one while the UK one was being renewed.

Is it usual to ask for these passports? Is there any way round it without a good reason and does anyone know why they ask?
