Unless you're on the rail pass, you would want to take Nozomi. About 2:15 between Tokyo and Kyoto stations.

We flew KIX-SFO yesterday. They opened our rollaboard at security, but that was only because we had a can of cosmetic liquid that my wife forgot to put in the checked bags. We were forced to throw it away, despite a protest from my wife that the stuff was very expensive.

Would they have shoo'd me away if I had walked into North Wing security with a boarding pass with a south Wing gate number?
The line to enter the security area at the United side (North?) seemed pretty long, but we were flying business, so we got passes to cut the line.
After security, the line for exit immigration was short, maybe five minutes.
Mrs.
nnn got SSSS'd (even though she has GE), so she had a short additional check at the gate.
