Just for the heck of it, I called the Avis counter at SYR and talked with an Avis agent. She reaffirmed what I wrote above, even told me that she herself had stayed until 3 am last night because the UA Express flight from ORD was several hours late and they had a confirmed renter on that flight. I don't think it gets any better than that.
