Ultimately: space is space. There's no two ways about it. You can't materials engineer or design your way to make a 2-4-2 Business/3-4-3 Economy arrangement into a good one - we've not seen the level of innovation in those areas matching those of smartphones. Or even fuel economy.
OTOH, if you do put First Class space into the Business Class seat you can't go wrong - passengers will find ways to use the extra space even if you put in a bad design.
