BTW, have you checked what it would cost to purchase miles and get award tickets, possibly through partner FF programs? If the flights are wide open, there could be good award availability at least for some dates.
Nah, I didn't try that. I wouldn't know how to, to be honest, I don't fly enough for miles to really do much. Usually just one long haul flight per year for the two of us. When we go to Europe, we usually drive so that we can take the dog!
The fee thing on Sri Lankan was very weird. It felt like they were doing the whole artificially having prices high so that they can offer a 'sale' or 'special price' offer. I know there are laws against that kind of thing in the UK but there are still ways to get around it - i.e. how DFS gets away with having stuff always on sale.
