I am not sure if I mentioned MAD or womeone else, but yes, you can save the airport surcharge if you get off Metro at the stop between the two terminals (township / suburb Barajas) and walk about 20 minutes (IIRC). Done it a few times thanks to cheap fares from US to MAD (haven't seen them lately).
