Relatively minor question, but still curious...

Am flying US later this week on a UA ticket. Planning to fly standby earlier in the day. Can I get on the standby list at the ticket counter or do I have to do it at the gate?

On UA, you can do it at the ticket counter, so I will often do it there if there is no line.
