Depends on how many points you already have to start with, but to go to Asia would cost at least 50k points, 110k or more for business class.

Read the thread on how to redeem, it's not that straight forward depending on the airline you want to take. But generally, MR points are flexible enough to take almost any airline (to asia at least).

You'll need to hit up a signup bonus with Plat or PRG at the 75k level or above to get started if you have zero points right now. Also, anchor your MR points with the fee-free everyday MR card in case you don't earn enough points in time and want to cancel the card.

IMO, getting cash advance through AMEX is silly and stupid expensive. Get a Schwab Online checking account. Their ATM card reimburses you for all ATM fees in the world. Also if you're a Chase Private Client and other higher net worth banking clients of other banks, they usually have a fee-reimbursed ATM card as well.

If I were traveling today, regardless of where I go in the world, I'll carry my AMEX plat but likely use cash (through my Schwab ATM card) 90% of the time.
