When I last flew SIN-DME-IAH, the process was exactly as you described (I was in Y and the lines were pretty long).
There was no warmth or smiles from the transfer staff checking passports/boarding pass/security.

I disagree. I took the former IAH-DME-SIN flight and found all employees to be helpful and efficient at DME. The only disappointing aspect was the lounge.
