Did you consider taking the boat from Noumea to IDP? I see the le Meridien reference it on their website.
I didn't because it was only a 20 minute flight and the way I was planning my trip, that didn't seem to make sense to me.
Also, my understanding from when I was looking at things that the boat isn't every day and that it's weather dependent (not that we were expecting bad weather) - that said, the boat probably doesn't cancel as often as the plane does as the boat is also probably bringing supplies to the island for the hotels & restaurants, so they have more commercial reasons for going.
