Yes it is as simple as you make it out to be.
However I deleted my NZ App for a couple of reasons, I know others who did it as well a couple of years ago, but NZ may have resolved the issues in subsequent releases.
However IIRC by checking in, which ever method, made subsequent changes to flights a little more difficult. You needed a member of NZ staff to do the change and that this ability was removed from the Koru Club staff for a while.
This may have all changed in the past year where I have only flown NZ 4 times.
