There are some airports/airlines where I know to worry and I spend time planning around that. Other airports/airlines never check so I don't worry. The more data points we have about which airlines check and at which airports, the better, because it can us plan more effectively.
I also think loads come into it, at least with some airports/airlines, so what may work day may not work on another.
Or alternatively, you could just stick by the published rules and likely not have to worry about it.
