If it was known that Qatar always lets it pass if there's high value (photo or other) equipment in the carryon bag that's too heavy, that would be nice. But if they don't, what do they say about the insurance?
So while for people who only load up the rollaboard bag with clothes, shoes, travel guides, whatnot, of low value (and covered by the standard baggage loss insurance limits the airline provides), it may be "if it happens it happens", but for people who can't fit all their expensive photo (or other) equipment into one carry-on bag it's
far from "if it happens it happens"!

Now I don't know if this works everywhere/on all airlines, but there is a way to get the airline to cover you in some cases. You need to declare a Special Declaration of Value when checking the bag in. If you're carrying high value, heavy stuff, it belongs in the hold with the required insurance.
