Do hotels charge more for double occupancy ?

It could just be me. Just tried to book a Mercure hotel, gave a rate of 60€, and was just about to book, when checked. It showed for one person only. Not having anything else at hotel, not Breakfast ( €20 for a few pastries and yoghurts ) or car parking or anything special, just a room. So changed it to two people in same room ( same bed - its a double ) just to be sure and rate went to 80€ !!

Am I missing anything .... housekeeping will just be doing the same amount of work .....

Hotel in Europe.
