My sponsor in Australia is booking my ticket LAX-MEL-LAX. I am a lifetime Delta Gold (2 MM_

1) Should i have them book me on Delta or on VA? I know they are partners but does it matter if i want to use miles to upgrade?

2) Is there ever a possibility to use miles to move from economy to Prem economy or to business??
