I am booking a saver award ticket from EWR-IAH. The website will give me some creative routes through non-hub cities, using "last flight of the night"/"first flight of the morning" connections. When flying EWR-XXX-IAH, you can not SDC just EWR-XXX, you will have to SDC the full EWR-XXX-IAH.
You could SDC XXX-IAH, once on the flight for EWR-XXX.
Note any SDC will require saver space to be available which is far from a certainty on some routes.
