No need to wait until you're in the air. As soon as you scan your bp to board the LH flight, it should mark the coupon used and will open up SDC options since all remaining flights are UA. However, if you have bags checked, it won't work on the app. Also, SDC on the app does have problems some times, in which case you'll have to see a transfer agent when you land, as previously suggested.
