Just checked the requirements for a US citizen travelling one-way to the Netherlands on the Skyteam database - https://skyteam.traveldoc.aero

There is no requirement for a return ticket, but it does say that the traveller can be refused if the traveller does not have access to EUR 34 for each day in the Netherlands.

I did not check any other Schengen countries.
