I guess maybe the current lav position may just be because Delta wanted a certain number of J seats and there wasn't room to get them all ahead of door 2 if the lavs had been at the front.
Back to the original topic of the thread, one other difference between the 763 and 764 is that in addition to the 764 D1 lavs being at the back of the cabin, they're also just normal small airplane lavs, whereas the 763 D1 lavs are actually pretty spacious.
Here is a seat map of the old 764 configuration. It looks like there use to be a LAV in the front of the F Cabin.
