Yes, I forgot to note we will be flying from SFO.
The excursion is that extra one way? So, I could book SFO>Capetown and then Capetown>JNB>SFO?
Or perhaps I use the excision for a bigger flight... Like SFO>Morocco>JNB (book flight to cape town separately) and then Cape town>SFO.
It's been a while since I booked a roundtrip international flight with miles, so thanks for the help and patience?
Oh, and what's the best way to search for award availability on partner airlines, like SA? The United search engine or SA's or something else?
Hello, I am in the same boat as you in planning a trip to South Africa. Morocco is in North Africa so it does not qualify as a free stop over. But if you want to do it in coach its only 17500, which is pretty damn good in my book.
If I was you though I would try to find a stop over destination where both SAA and one of the european airlines fly too. Otherwise you'll have to backtrack to JHB to get your flight home. I have seen pretty good availability for Mauiritius, Addis, and Nairobi.
For getting to south africa the most availability I see is XXX-GRU-JNB, but it will involve a long layover at an ok airport. When I do it I am going to try to do a long ... layover in frankfurt on the way home. good luck
