I hate it when hotels do this (which is really rare in SPG in my experience). Maybe they favor those with paid reservations over those with award stays?
Another little pet peeve: fridges with no room for any of your own stuff, plus automatic charging so you can't move it either.

I was here last week on a paid stay (3rd or 4th time here) and had the same experience. No upgrades yet they were selling rooms with views (and I was given a courtyard room). And I'm a Plat100! It's just how they are here... you have to fight for an upgrade. I didn't care so I just let it go. Hotel needs to be retrained re benefits imo. Not sure who does that... but they need to.
