There are lots of places in Queenstown that offer hiking rentals. Once you get there, you'll see them everywhere. I never rented from any of them, we brought everything with us when we hiked the Milford Track. Make sure you get a pack liner if you do bring your own backpack, the DOC sells them for something like $9.
