Because AC and AE have terrible IT. This one is actually possible. And it could be that a glitch in the tax calculation was why it couldn't complete the booking online.
But $300 still seems like too much.
Two years ago,I wanted a flight from AMS to Berlin. The surcharge was $400. Eurostar was my answer.
