Even if as has a weasel escape clause it is very, very bad PR to do this to a frequent flyer.
This is not a good way to treat good customers...

You should recommend to your friend that he write a letter to customer relations and ask for a free bump ticket, be sure and mention past loyalties to AS and future intentions to travel AS.
They really have no choice but to take care of your friend and resolve this.
