Flying on points, bumped + no compensation? Is this right?

Itinerary: DCA-SEA-YYC

Flying on points on AS, my friend got bumped, and they didn't give him any compensation, citing the rationale that 'since he's on points, you can be bumped without compensation'.

Is this correct Alaska Air procedure? Please advise. Merry Christmas!
