Not an AA flyer, but don't see why you could not check your bags all the way through if AA.
If same as all other US airports, you will claim your bags, take them through Customs and drop off on belt, exit security, clear domestic security and proceed to gate for next flight.
Not familiar with DFW times, but while tight, should be doable. DFW is very easy to get around.
Oh, and Passport control is before you get your bags. Depending on which country's passport will determine how fast you get through Immigration IME. If British, probably fly through.
