I am guessing more for those who sleep in the open.

That is a tough one.

If you know you will be sleeping in unsecure area it might be an idea to bring a pillowcase, and keep stuff inside of it when you sleep.

I only slept in shared room hostel once this year, and put stuff I can't miss inside a pillowcase or keep in pocket in my shorts.

The netbook I use is 10 years old, hence not desirable and it would not be that big a deal if someone swiped it. But now that I found my tablet will probably travel with that - again not exactly new, and even when new it only cost $100.

Passport and ID, due to hassle of replacing, is FAR more valuable IMHO, and stay in my pockets. But I don't keep personal stuff on my devices which many do, so that could be a YMMV.
