Which opens a very nice avenue for a lawsuit at Human Rights Court in Strasbourg,

because Britain would be discriminating between US citizens based on their place of origin (Massachussets Vs. -- say -- Dubya's Texas),

and based on their GENDER -- not sexual orientation (because marriages are petty petit bourgeois arrangements, anyway and people may marry NOT in order to have sex with each other, but for financial reasons)

BUT INDEED based on gender: because the UK -- prior to a possible (or not) change in legislation would be recognising the marriage of -- say -- a man to a woman in the US, but NOT the marriage of a woman to a woman, this discriminating solely based on gender.
