We're heading there for 4th July weekend, and the location is just fantastic, but am a little scared off by the lack of positive chatter here.

Lack of chatter doesn't mean it's not a good property. I've been to quite a few properties that nobody talks about, until asked, like now, and they are happy with.
I haven't stayed since it was a Conrad. But the location and the amount of irregular suites is a plus. Views from rooms, not so much.
The W will be a mad house with those wanting to see fireworks or attending the Taste.
