Second, I believe the issue has now been resolved and we'll end up having to pay instead of flying for free.
However, about your research, just take that with a grain of salt. AC is not great and not terrible. You would likely find similar stories about more or less any airlines. Plus trashing AC is pretty much a Canadian national sport.
