The Grand is fantastic, especially in Summer if you can get a room overlooking the harbour. It is also very convenient for the tourist sights. See my review on tripadvisor.com from my stay last Aug/Sep. HOWEVER, rooms are VERY variable in size and quality, in a way that a hotel run by a international chain would never allow.

A regular feature of a stay at the Grand is people at reception complaining about their rooms! Last time I was there I booked a Deluxe (two levels up from the standard rooms, which are small enough to touch both walls at the same time!) and it was a complete tip, untouched by a paint brush for 20 years. Quick complaint later and I got a huge, beautiful, brand new junior suite. Check in early so you can move if necessary. The Radisson SAS Strand is literally a minute away and also overlooks the water, although not the palace.
