I don't remember him saying it was a 'huge mistake', he said it was the 'wrong decision'. If it was such a 'huge mistake' he probably would have tried to undo it, which he didn't.
This ad campaign is UA trying to remedy the main problem of their EWR-only strategy - the psychological reluctance of NYC dwellers to cross state lines for the purpose of getting to the airport.
I guarantee that there are many, many people who instinctively prefer JFK to EWR because they think going to Jersey would be a hassle without ever having seriously tested if that's actually the case for them.
