I once went to Muroji, an out-of-the-way temple in Nara Prefecture, and as I got off the Kintetsu station Muroguchi, there were two cabs and a bus waiting. I had been talking to some Japanese people on the train, and we all decided to take the bus, but I was surprised that there were cabs at all.
The Japan Guide website suggests train plus cab, in fact.
it's possible to get taxi going from station to the farm, but maybe no taxi back (so 30 min walk)
I'm at the mercy of the train schedule (JR Oito line), frequency is every 45-70 minutes
(alternative would be asking the cabs at Hotaka to wait for me at the farm, and pay maybe 1 hour of their time - 10 min drive, 40 min roam around, 10 min drive back)

1-2 hour taxi rental probably isn't as costly as renting
