As to why that occurred, they typically cut customers loose who don't put spend on the cards or who aren't otherwise profitable, they have no reason to convince you to keep a DL Amex if you're only using it for bag waivers that they have to pay for, for example. The Platinum usually seems to result in retention attempts at any level of spend, presumably because the fee is in itself profitable.
