Thanks for the input. I am not the sole custodial parent of my son. I share joint custody with my ex-husband, his dad. We were married when we adopted him.

BTW, IIRC some states make a distinction between physical custody and custody in terms of making decisions affecting the child. There might also be a need for some document allowing OP and husband to make decisions about medical treatment while abroad.
It sounds as if a notarized letter from the other parents might be the safest route to go
