It sounds to me like the OP and her former husband adopted the son together. Depending on the custody arrangements, the former husband might equally be the parent. Also, the adoption papers presumably were issued in the OP's former name, so does she need something to prove that she is the same person as the one who used the former name before her current marriage?

To me, it sounds like step one would be to bring the custody orders and depending on what they say, getting notarized statements from the former spouse(s).

USA, French, and Italian immigration officials are involved here as well as DL and AZ gate agents.

BTW, IIRC some states make a distinction between physical custody and custody in terms of making decisions affecting the child. There might also be a need for some document allowing OP and husband to make decisions about medical treatment while abroad.
