Had a very similar experience a year ago. Accor Plus is a great program if you can get value out of it, at the time I did not renew I was not expecting many hotel stays for the next year and thus couldn't see the point. The way the processes are handled, it's like Accor doesn't not want to know you full stop.
Three months later after getting help from a local Accor plus rep to restore my status, my employment changed to one where I spend every night in a hotel. Where I spend those nights is a choice I have, and the experience I went through almost saw me turned off Accor forever. That's around about 100 subsequent nights revenue they almost lost due to poor systems and processes.
