There are exceptions - Hanzell and Ridge (Santa Cruz Mountains) spring to mind but they're still triple the price of similar quality from elsewhere. Which of course is why they can't export the stuff.
Funny...i feel the same way about French and Italian wine as you do with American wine but I admit my experience with them is limited. From reading your post I am pretty sure your experience with American wines is also limited...especially if you think Napa/Sonoma is the be all end all for US wine.
