Well, you could just do a booking now involving VA and see what happens. It turns out the three options you get are Y/Y, Y+/W, and J/J. Shorthaul connections (eg: SFO-LAX-SYD) book the same way.
Contrast with (eg) RDU-JFK-LHR which offers Y/Y, F/W, and F/J. LAX-JFK-LHR OTOH offers Y/Y, Y+/W, J/J. So perhaps it's partner and route dependent.
