In defense of AA, some folks might not want the standby list to roll over. Suppose you were booked and standing by for mainline service but didn't clear the standby list for the first flight. If the next one on your route is a tiny RJ departing just slightly before your original flight, a reasonable and rational person would not want to be automatically booked onto the RJ.
