I'm not a pilot, but I don't think it is easy to detect a leak. I don't believe fuel gauges are very accurate in general. I believe the pilots (and computers) frequently monitor the burn rate during flight to look for possible issues well ahead of time to ensure they don't run out.

I've always thought fuel leaks were a dime a dozen in aviation (not sure about commercial aviation). Sure, you don't want jp5 all over the place, but it's not going to be like die hard 2 either. Sometimes I wonder if they are more concerned about the environmental effects of a hazmat spill.
To clarify....

In the 767 we cannot see any part of the wing from the flight deck. The fuel gauges and totalizers are very accurate in the plane. Furthermore, our checklist procedures include verifying fuel quantity 3 separate times prior to takeoff. If there are anomolies, they'll be caught pretty quickly IMO. Fuel indication problems really aren't a big deal domestically but for ETOPS is a no go item.

I'm assuming by your response you're from a military background (thank you for your service.) JP5 is what we used on aircraft carriers because of the extremely high flash points. Airliners use JET A, completely different fuel.
